Tech companies and highway 101

Great to drive highway 101 back to San Francisco today. A thrilling list of tech companies on each side of the freeway - Sales Force, Intel, Oracle, E Bay, Cisco, NetLogic, EMC - to name just a few.

It really is great to be in SF if you work in technology - you get this feeling of being at home, but also in some holy place.

But we also noticed the vacant buildings - so obviously designed for technology companies - all glassy and classy - and empty.

I wonder where this will go in the next year. There are a lot of hype-like valuations in the social media space, and its sad to see those empty offices and shattered dreams. California has a 12% unemployment rate right now - way over the US average of about 9%.

But from my visit so far California just has so much going for it - natural beauty, innovation and a sense of pride of its contribution to technology. I am sure that whatever happens to short term blips in the market and the social media space, California will continue to help lead the technology charge.

Challenges will come I am sure from so much innovation in China. People here need to stay focused - and maybe drive forwards some niche spaces with significant barriers to entry. In some of these they really do have an advantage from all the tech history, know how and great people that have taken up residence here to pursue the technology dream.
