If only I could know what it is I don’t know
Sounds like a pretentious title for a blog.
But in my experience at Claromentis over the last 10 years growing an IT business is fairly intense, very fast moving and requires a balance of skills that it seems I might just about possess for only rare moments in time.
Even with smarter guys than myself around me, each an expert in their domains, it still seems to be me that makes decisions that are supposed to take it all into account and then decide where to allocate resources.
Working primarily in a defined domain, like providing IT support, or being a PHP developer certainly requires outstanding skills to be amongst the best in that field. Personally I would have no idea where to start. But it seems to me that with primary responsibilities like these you can see the boundaries, you know what’s relevant and have a good idea of what you need to study, or where you need to hire, to fill the gaps. You can track improvements, take measurable tests, gain certifications, easily network with peers.
But if you run an IT company what you are always fighting to understand is what it is that you don’t know, what’s coming around the inevitable next corner. Even now, coming out of the most profitable quarter that Claromentis has ever had – I just wonder what it is that at the end of next quarter I will wish I had spent some time on this evening.
So I guess it is a bit of a strange title, but that seems to be my continuous challenge that matters more than most, even if I can’t measure it or ask anyone else to help me fix it.
